In order to succeed in HSC PDHPE there are a few fundamentals that you need to cover. Success in HSC PDHPE is not rocket science and it does not require you to be a genius. All it requires is a for you to get a few basics right.

In order to succeed in HSC PDHPE, you first need to work consistently at a solid level. This means that you need to have regular study times (not homework or assessment times…. STUDY times). You should set aside a minimum 30 min 3 times a week to study PDHPE. I would not go beyond 1 hr of study 4 times a week as this becomes excessive, will increase your stress levels, decrease you social, recreational and physical activity time. I think 45 min is ideal. It is enough time for you to do something constructive (like complete a bunch of exam questions or go through all your flashcards), and is frequent enough that you should not forget the information you revise. (see spaced repetition for more information)

The second thing you need to do in order to succeed in HSC PDHPE is to submit work regularly. At this time of year, just after a set of exams, many students shy away from doing more practice questions. It is important that you regularly complete practice questions (at least 12 marks worth a week, but don’t worry this is your study time). You then need to submit these to your teacher and get feedback. Once you get feedback, go back to the question and redo the question, then resubmit your response for further feedback (repeat this until you get 100%).

You should also be submitting draft assessment tasks. Plan ahead to have these done about 1 week in advance. This will mean your teacher has time to read through it and provide feedback for you before you submit the task for final grading.

Of course, in order to do the above you will probably need some sort of study schedule that you have made and stick to. I highly recommend that you draw one up and put it in a place where your parents can see it. This will help you to stick to it. You could even ask them to help you to stick to it. I’m sure they will be happy to remind you. You could also set alarms on your phone to notify you when to study and then turn your phone OFF while you study. Distracted study is not study! If you don’t have your phone on then a notification or a call will not take you away from your study. Having said this, you should also be somewhere no-one will interrupt your study – library, at school, in your room etc.

Finally, in order to succeed in HSC PDHPE you will need rest 🙂 that’s right, you need to have times when you break from work and just have fun or sleep. Whether this be family time, or going out with friends, it is important for you to rest well with people. You also need to sleep well. This means you need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Don’t stay up late frequently!! Sleep is important for brain function (as is good nutrition) and poor brain function means less effective study.

Those are my tips to help you succeed in HSC PDHPE.
