Differences in coverage for different sports across various print and electronic media

Mass media is diverse when it comes to sport. Coverage for different sports is based on the popularity and success of that particular sport in the area coverage would be provided. Live events, magazines, newspapers, radio programs and mobile phone applications are all examples of mass media.

A very small percentage of media coverage is given to women’s sport. This has generated the idea that male sports are more valued, more exciting to watch and more popular. Women’s sport is often shown out of peak viewing times and away from mainstream channels for example 9GEM rather than Channel 9.

In recent times we have seen a change in women’s sports gaining an increase in coverage and generating a larger audience compared to their male counterparts. This was the case at the recent Olympics where the female swim team gained a larger audience and greater amount of anticipation in the lead up compared to the males. Women outperformed men during the swimming across all distances and events. Women’s Rugby League has also seen a shift in coverage with the strong link to the male competition.
