Ways of thinking about the body

Different cultures have different ways of thinking about the body. Islamic women are restricted to full covering clothing while participating in any physical activity. Cultures also restrict participation based on age or gender- some sports are only offered to males due to their strenuous output and impact on the body. Some western nations have been subjected to eating disorders in order to look a certain way or physical inactivity that can have detrimental effects on an individuals health.

On the flip side of this, sport creates its own subculture for ways to think about the body. Those serious about sport an physical activity may refer to their body as “a machine” showing a positive attitude towards the capabilities of their body. Athletes tend to have greater self-esteem and less body image issues due to the positive effects of exercise on their mental health.
